When Anna Berg opens a box left to her by a dead neighbour, she expects nothing more than old papers and forgotten clutter. Instead, she finds a photograph of a snow covered manor, an Estonian travel document issued in 1947, and a church record stating that the same man died in 1944.

To most people, it would be a curiosity. To Anna, who works in document control and quality assurance, it is an impossibility.

Her search leads from Sweden to Estonia, from post-war archives to a half-sealed room in an old manor house, where every answer seems to raise a more troubling question. Who was Aleksander Rehav?
