In this novel you are taken on a journey with a woman standing at a crossroads between the known and the unknown, between a past she loves and a future she fears.
Through her eyes, themes of longing and loss, hope and faith are explored, as well as what it truly means to follow ones heart.
From a small American town to the windswept western coast of Norway, we follow her struggle to find her place in the world. She carries with her a cup from the time and place she left behind, a simple keepsake that will later take on an unexpected meaning.
The story unfolds in the first half of the twentieth century, a true account of life on the western coast of Norway, framed by fiction.
Roy Thomassen is the great grandson of the woman at the centre of this novel. He has previously written various texts, but The Broken Cup is his first novel.
Working on the book has been a way for him to bring his familys history to light, drawing on stories passed down from children and grandchildren. With this novel, he shares both a personal and historically grounded portrayal of life on the western coast of Norway in the first half of the twentieth century.
