This book is a brief introduction to Contaminant Hydrogeology and Uncertainty Quantification using COMSOL Multiphysics 6. The book introduces progressively the subject of quantitative Hydrogeology and Uncertainty Quantification. It illustrates how to develop two- and three-dimensional models.

Contaminant transport in porous media or fracture rock occurs due to water flow in the porous media and the fractures. The interplay between flow, thermal, mechanical and chemical phenomena play, at different degrees, an important role. The Multiphysics capabilities of the software used in this book offer the user the opportunity to model such complex and coupled phenomena in a simple way, allowing one to rapidly progress in the development of 2D and 3D hydrogeological and transport models used by engineers and scientists in fields such as Environmental Engineering, Hydrology/Hydrogeology, Nuclear Waste management, risk assessments, etc.

Risk estimation is often the ultimate goal whenever one examines how contaminants migrate in the environment. Several types of uncertainties are always present, such as model or conceptual uncertainties and parameter- and scenario uncertainties. Uncertainty and Sensitivity analysis are the subject of Uncertainty Quantification. COMSOL Multiphysics 6 has an advanced module on Uncertainty Quantification which is also introduced in this book. This book is a brief introduction to how to model contaminant transport in geological formations, illustrating how different phenomena of importance for contaminant transport are simulated in COMSOL Multiphysics 6 and how to apply uncertainty quantification techniques relevant to the field. Creating surrogate models and neural networks are also illustrated in the book.

António de Campos Pereira

António de Campos Pereira received his doctorate in Physics from Stockholm University. A native of Mozambique and long term resident of Uppsala, Sweden, he has dedicated his career to advanced research and technical consultancy in the field of nuclear waste management, with particular emphasis on high level radioactive residues from nuclear reactors. His scientific contributions include the authorship of several technical books and participation in a range of research programs addressing the long term safety and characterization of radioactive materials. Since retiring from Stockholm University, he continues to serve as an independent consultant. His academic interests further encompass the study of the Portuguese language and the development of applications in artificial intelligence.
